About this place
Situated along the street in Nogata, Nakano Ward, Maruchan is a versatile neighborhood diner serving seafood-focused cooking that transitions seamlessly from midday teishoku sets to evening drinking snacks. The house standout at lunch is the sashimi set: loaded generously with cuts like fatty Pacific bluefin tuna, plump scallops, and abalone, it delivers an indulgence well beyond the expectations of an everyday set meal. Seafood rice bowls are equally well represented, with marinated tuna don, mixed kaisen don, and salmon roe don providing plenty of incentive for fish lovers on their midday break.
Equally prominent alongside the seafood are the hearty fried mains. Generously portioned options such as the extra-large fried oysters—crisp on the outside and plump within—as well as the oversized ebi fry and hearty tonkatsu cater generously to hefty appetites. Beyond complete meal sets, items like deep-fried horse mackerel (aji fry) and skewered cutlets (kushikatsu) can be ordered à la carte, making it easy to pair crisp fried bites with a platter of sashimi.
Come evening, the chalkboards fill with casual izakaya dishes made to accompany a draft beer or an oolong high. Offerings range from a sashimi assortment designed for 2 to 3 diners, finely chopped horse mackerel tataki, and live whelk to house-cured miso-marinated Patagonian toothfish (ginmutsu), alongside comforting staples such as stewed beef tendon and potato salad. Whether for a solo meal or a relaxed drink as dusk settles, it remains an unpretentious neighborhood fixture.
